(RBT®) Scope of Practice

This professional development unit introduces a practical framework to help behavior technicians evaluate their level of competence with specific skills within applied behavior analysis. Participants apply a three-level framework to determine whether a skill is foundational, developing, or advanced within their current repertoire. Through applied scenarios, the training helps technicians recognize when a skill or situation falls within their scope of practice and scope of competence, when something falls outside of ABA services entirely, and how to respond appropriately while maintaining ethical and professional boundaries, ethics requirements, and appropriate role responsibilities on the treatment team. 

Learning Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

1. Recognize when a situation may fall outside the scope of ABA services or the technician’s role. 
2. Differentiate between foundational, developing, and advanced levels of competence for specific skills.
3. Recognize situations that require guidance from a supervising behavior analyst.
4. Demonstrate appropriate professional responses when interacting with caregivers about topics inside and outside their scope of practice.

Recommended Background Knowledge

Basic understanding of the behavior technician role and working under the supervision of a behavior analyst.
